Design Strategy
For my subject this book is written about, I chose to incorporate various elements of her personality. Through the use of food colouring and charcoal, I sensitively illustrated themes relating to birds. The book addresses heavy topics like illness, divorce and suicide. Therefore, birds were used to translate these themes rather than depicting literal scenes. The writing of this book also swarmed around the theme of birds; all chapter titles reference this.

Dust cover. Book size 250 x 250 mm.
Endpapers (left), made with ink drops on wet paper and mirrored to resemble The Rorschach test. Book cover (right), also made with ink drops on wet paper. The patterns were photographed while still wet, to capture the intricate bleeding of the ink.
Title page (left) and contents page (right).
This illustration, along with all the other colourful illustrations in this book, was made by using a combination of liquid food colouring and watercolour.
This final chapter spread is bright and colourful, to represent the subject's outlook on life and the future. After so much sorrow, she found a way to keep a positive outlook.
